RESUMO

Objectives: To explore the relationship between sexual orientation and specific sexual and risk behaviors, compare the number of sexual behaviors and attitudes among people of different sexual orientations, and test the mediating effect of attitudes toward sexual behaviors in the relationship between sexual orientation and the number of sexual behaviors. Methods: A total of 2288 participants completed a checklist of sexual behaviors, indicators of sexual risk behaviors, and a scale of attitudes toward sexual behaviors. Results: Bisexual women engaged in a greater number of sexual behaviors and had more positive attitudes toward sexual behaviors than heterosexual women. Homosexual men engaged in a greater number of sexual behaviors than heterosexual men, and homosexual and bisexual men had more positive attitudes toward sexual behaviors than heterosexuals. Finally, we show the mediating role of attitudes toward sexual behaviors in the relationship between sexual orientation and the number of sexual behaviors engaged in. Conclusions: The importance of considering sexual orientation when analyzing sexual behaviors and attitudes is highlighted.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To develop a tool to support medicine-focused person-centred consultations between community pharmacists and stroke survivors. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews with 15 stroke survivors and 16 community pharmacists were conducted. Thematic analysis of the data was performed and emerging themes examined to determine their relevance to the principles of delivering person-centred care. Findings were used to generate a framework from which a consultation tool was created. Face validity and the feasibility of using the tool in practice were explored with participating pharmacists. RESULTS: Three major themes were identified; personal, process and environmental factors. A tool, in two parts, was developed, A 'Getting to know me' form which would help the pharmacist to appreciate the individual needs of the stroke survivor and a consultation guide to facilitate the consultation process. Pharmacists considered that both were useful and would support a person-centred medicine-focussed consultation. CONCLUSION: A consultation tool, reflecting the needs of stroke survivors, has been developed and is feasible for use within community pharmacy practice. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Pharmacists must recognise the individual needs of stroke survivors to ensure that they provide consultations which are truly person-centred. The tool developed could support medicine-related consultations with patients with other long term conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The endothelium lines blood and lymph vessels and protects underlying tissues against external agents such as viruses, bacteria and parasites. Yet, microbes and particularly viruses have developed sophisticated ways to bypass the endothelium in order to gain access to inner organs. De novo infection of the liver parenchyma by many viruses and notably hepatitis viruses, is thought to occur through recruitment of virions on the sinusoidal endothelial surface and subsequent transfer to the epithelium. Furthermore, the liver endothelium undergoes profound changes with age and in inflammation or infection. However, primary human liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) are difficult to obtain due to scarcity of liver resections. Relevant derived cell lines are needed in order to analyze in a standardized fashion the transfer of pathogens across the liver endothelium. By lentiviral transduction with hTERT only, we have immortalized human LSECs isolated from a hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) patient and established the non-transformed cell line TRP3. TRP3 express mesenchymal, endothelial and liver sinusoidal markers. Functional assessment of TRP3 cells demonstrated a high capacity of endocytosis, tube formation and reactivity to immune stimulation. However, TRP3 displayed few fenestrae and expressed C-type lectins intracellularly. All these findings were confirmed in the original primary LSECs from which TRP3 were derived suggesting that these features were already present in the liver donor. We consider TRP3 as a model to investigate the functionality of the liver endothelium in hepatic inflammation in infection.
